Twilight Zone

This ethereal U.S. band provides us with "Divinity" an album full of pale dark emotions. The band is: Kit Messick (ex Unto Ashes) on voice, the new violinist Joanna Dalin (ex Backworld),and the songwriter Babbo. The ethereal music is based on romantic sad mellow guitars, keyboards of watercolor shades mixed with bright enchanting voices. The title track has some ethereal /trip hop elements and takes inspiration from the Milton's "Paradise Lost", elegiac ancestral figures dances around celestial objects.

The following track "Forsaken by Sky" is more cold wave like "Sad Lovers And Giants " where Kit's voice becomes solemn and the music is illuminated by hi frequencies. "Julia" is a romantic ballad sang by Babbo, acoustic guitars fluctuating on the shades of a magical secular green. Our soul reflects in the instrumental oblivion's blue eyes of the song "In this Heaven Once More" which can remind us of the unforgettable sounds of "The Chameleons". Water games made by bright shining guitars and smooth synths. Stylish similarity to the "Fairy" productions from Prikosnovenie or from Project.

The Mirror Reveals' Divinity - a CD EP follow-up to Frames of Teknicolor - is a highly professional combination of vocals, acoustic guitar, violin and synth. Kit Messick's beautiful voice is given full reign on the title track (which was inspired by Milton's Paradise Lost) and on 'Forsaken by Sky', a light song sympathetically accompanied with violin and guitar. Babbo sings well on the dark 'Julia', and the EP concludes with an instrumental, 'In This Heaven Once More'. The Mirror Reveals' dark torch songs have been further enhanced by Joanna Dalin (ex-Backworld) on violin.

It's a big pleasure to listen to 'Divinity' and to write sound about it, but it's a shame the music is only during 21 minutes. Musically they sound like acoustic, experimental and ambient electronic. The EP is starting very relaxing with the title track "Divinity'', in which female vocalist Kit Messick has been supported by acoustic guitars and some keyboards. At the following songs The Mirror Reveals is starting to sound more and more experimental, with "In this heaven once more" as the highlight. With "Julia" we hear vocalist James Babbo; also a simple and sober song, but very powerful and beautiful as well. Hopefully the next release will be a full length album.

The Mirror Reveals have released a 4-track EP DIVINITY as a follow-up to their debut album FRAMES OF TEKNICOLOR. This 4-track CD is a limited edition EP with 4 excellent tracks. It begins with the title-track DIVINITY which features Kit Messick with her beautiful vocals and excellent ethereal music. This catchy tune is uplifting, yet dreamy and ethereal in nature. The next track FORSAKEN BY SKY continues with the female vocals, dreamy acoustic guitars, soft beat and features a nice violin part. JULIA features male vocals and is very dark and brooding in nature. The EP then closes with the beautiful instrumental piece IN THIS HEAVEN ONCE MORE. This track is a blend of melodic guitars and synths that seem to float and blend together almost perfectly. Be sure to check this EP out if you have a chance.

This beautiful combination between seductive vocals, masterful pieces of music and a hint of electronica make up this wonderful group based in New York City. After listening to generally Aphex Twin, Nine Inch Nails and the like for the good bit of a year, this EP is a very refreshing listen. Yeah, I know what you all are going to say. You're going to say, "But DarkSol, you're not goth... Why do you like this music?" Well, let me tell you exactly why I like this music.

First off, the vocals for the songs absolutely bury themselves into your soul. The sweet, liquid beauty of Kit Messick just delves into my very essence evoking emotions that I really don't want to talk about. Also, the way she delivers the words, the power behind them surges.

Second, the lyrics themselves are also very powerful. Babbo selects the best words to convey the emotions that each song was meant to send out. It wasn't like he went to a thesaurus, but he thought long and hard about each word choice.

This is a wonderful EP, unfortunately; only about 1000 of these were ever released so getting your hands on one of these babies might be a hard thing to do.

Before releasing their sophmore release, The Mirror Reveals released Divinity to show the new. more complex direction they've taken their sound.

Violinist Joanna Dalin, formerly of Backworld, gives the songs a delicate beauty reminiscent of the Changelings that will mesmerize the listener. The title track is brilliantly composed with soothing soundscapes and clear haunting vocals. Since the disappearance of the Hyperium label, few bands have achieved such wonder and grace.

"Forsaken by Sky" is driven by acoustic guitars and accompanied by sweet violin melodies. It has a lighter, more folky feel than "Divinity." "Julia is the last vocal track, and also the only song with male vocals. He laments because "Julia" is in an unbreakable trance. His voice sounds distant, almost hollow without her. The violin sounds like it's weeping with the singer as he hopes this song will bring her back to him. The final track is instrumental. It takes a journey to another dimension, transporting the soul to otherwise unattainable heights. Each note from the guitars ascends while the synths and violin create the surrounding rich landscape.

The Mirror Reveals teases us with this release as it shows promise to surpass their debut masterpiece.

Morbid Outlook

A beautiful sophomore album from The Mirror Reveals. It is especially nice to hear both male (James Babbo) and female (Kit Messick) vocals this time around, giving this the music a delicate sensitivity and passion.

The Mirror Reveals are currently in the studio working on their second full-length album scheduled for release on the Middle Pillar label in early 2002 . In the meantime, don't miss their new limited edition four track EP entitled DIVINITY. With four ethereal tracks featuring the lilting and evocative vocals of Kit Messick and one uplifting instrumental, DIVINITY is simply divine.

One of the first things about The Mirror Reveals that won me over was that they are without question responsible for truly beautiful and moving music. A lot of bands claim to be soothing and Romantic, and try desperately to appear that way. But few bands are as genuine and convincing as The Mirror Reveals, and it seems as though this mastering of emotion comes naturally and rather easily for the band. For a lack of a better description, this music is very sweet and just nice, and rarely do I find that to be a virtue in a band. I am always seeking excessively dark and dreary music, and it is rare that I enjoy ‘lighter’ and more pleasant music. But this is exceptional, and has the ability to hold the attention and calm the senses all the same.

The “Divinity” EP did much more than simply wet my appetite to hear more of The Mirror Reveals; instead it made me ravenous and twice as anxious to pick up the debut. If you are a fan of swirling, romantic ethereal music and female fronted outfits like Love Spirals Downwards and the earlier work by the Cocteaus, don’t delay any longer in checking out this starkly charming band.
